Active Week 2024

Another year, another Active School Week! It was another action-packed week for 'Active Week' 2024.

Active School Week is the initiative of the Active School Flag, Ireland’s premium health initiative which has focused on enhancing physical activity in school-going children since 2009.

Each class participated in so many activities:

Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Classes walked and ran Slí na Sláinte at the Comprehensive School field.
Juniors, Seniors, First and Sixth Classes walked/ran 1km in the school field.
All classes learned to perform a dance with Ms. O' Reilly in the Handball Alley.
Cork City Sports fell on the Thursday of our Active Week.
Art competition to promote Active Week with a winner receiving a prize in each class.
Gymnastics for JI-6th in Newmarket, combined with a visit to the Playground.
Teddybears Picnic for JI-1st.

Boherbue NS was awarded the Active Schools Flag on May 17th. Congratulations to Ms Tracey Lenihan who coordinated the Event, to all the Staff who organised the events for the pupils and to the pupils who participated so well in all the fun activities.

We were very lucky to welcome special guest Kevin O' Connor, who is participating in the Special Olympics in golf in Berlin this year. He showed us his Olympic medals and answered questions from each class. We wish him the best of luck next week!!

5th Class recently became Playground Leaders.

They help to teach the younger classes games and play these every Tuesday (weather-permitting)

Teddy Bears' Picnic

Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class had a wonderful time at the Teddy Bears' Picnic. They had lots of fun dancing to music and playing with their toys.

Physical activity throughout the year

Throughout the year the children participate in:

Some have changed due to covid but we hope they will be back soon

As part of the school’s Physical Education Programme, swimming lessons have been arranged for the pupils in 1st -6th classes in Mallow and Killarney Swimming Pool. Each group receives 8 lessons. · Dancing lessons from Jimmy Smyth- all classes
Sean nós dancing from Triona Mangan- 3rd-6th classes
GAA Football lessons from Pat Spratt/Martin- junior infants- 2nd class, 3rd-6th
Fun and Fitness lesson from Fitness Ireland- all classes
Wheelchair Basketball Tournament organised by L.C.A. students- all classes
Sciath na Scól GAA Blitz 3rd-6th classes
Cork Basketball Blitz- 5th/ 6th class
FAI 5-a-side Soccer Blitz-4th-6th class
Bike Lesson from Cork Sports Partnership-6th class
Tag rugby from instructor-5th/6th class

The whole school participated in 'The Daily Mile' challenge 20/21, where the children run or jog at their own pace during the school day at a time of the teacher's choosing.

It was super to have 'Active Week' in school this year on April 26th-30th. We were so lucky with the beautiful weather each day, that enabled us to do lots of activities in the field.
