Step 5: STEM Show & Tell

Primary Science Fair BT Young Scientist

2023

6th class decided to investigate our heart rates during reading aloud, for BT Young Scientist. We named our project ‘Was it Something I read?’. We began our project by collecting data on before, during and after the teacher reading. We also investigated our heart rates before, during and after students reading their novels (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) out loud to the class. We compared our heart rates to when we were reading out loud in front of the class versus when the teacher was reading out loud to us. We recorded the heart rates of 26 children using oximeters. These are monitors that measure heart rate, pulse and oxygen levels. Our results proved our predictions correct. Which meant all our heart rates went up while we were reading aloud in front of the class and our heart rates went down when the teacher was reading out loud. These results were astonishing! We enjoyed the investigative process of our BT Young Scientist project. We got to present our projects at the primary science fair at BT Young Scientist in the RDS in Dublin.
